Sulina – Where the Danube meets the Sea
Sulina is Romania’s easternmost town, tucked away where the Danube flows into the Black Sea. With its first mention dating back to 945 AD during the Byzantine Empire, Sulina carries a long and colorful history.
By the mid-1800s, it was a remote fishing village frequented by sailors and pirates navigating the Danube’s narrow channels. In the 19th century, Sulina rose to prominence as a major international port and became the headquarters of the European Commission of the Danube, turning into a vibrant crossroads of cultures and commerce.
The Old Lighthouse
Built in the 1800s, the old lighthouse once guided ships safely from the Black Sea into the Danube. Today, it houses a museum that reflects Sulina’s golden age of maritime trade and navigation.
The Multiethnic Cemetery
One of the most unique cemeteries in Europe, Sulina’s maritime graveyard tells stories of the town’s diverse past. Sailors, pirates, nobles, and adventurers from many nations and religions are buried here. Their tombstones and epitaphs reveal tales of love, tragedy, and mystery of Greek pirates, lost princesses and forgotten heroes.
